1.
Earthworm 02:06
the rain came. the rain came. for the first time in a hundred years, the rain came. small green things. small green things grow a little bolder, took on brand new names, when the rain came. and you said “someday, someone is gonna love you like i do.” someday someone is gonna love you for a very very long time. the birds stared. the birds stared from underneath their shelters, huddled for warmth like they were holding you tightly. our clothes dripped. our clothes dripped as we stood there in the doorway, frozen like monuments to a decades-long war. and you said “someday, someone is gonna love you like i do.” someday someone is gonna love you in a way i only wish i could.
2.
when i look at you, all i see is the sun—  when i look at you, all i see is the sun—  though what you really are is just some distant, dying star, but when i look at you, you burn brighter than anything. when the summer comes, the fields will all turn brown— when the summer comes, the fields will all turn brown— sixty miles outta memphis, your blonde crew-cut was sparkling, and we were swearing up and down to one another that it wouldn’t come to this, and you sat me down underneath that old tea tree, said “somebody’s gotta get hurt, so why should it be me?” when i say your name, i say it really loud—  when i say your name i say it really loud— ‘cause a thousand others always hide underneath each time i try, but when i say it loud enough i can’t really hear anything else.
3.
hanging on a headrush— and i’m calling your name, but you can’t hear a thing ‘cause you’re just out of frame, and the crowd keeps telling you one thing, repeated again. nobody bothers with you anymore— ‘cause you wave them away, pass it off like a phase, i’ve studied your act and i’m pretty impressed. but you don’t have to go off if you don’t want to, you can just stay here and be quiet all night. now i’m taking photographs of places that you said used to bring you down, ‘cause some good-ol’-boy honky-tonk motherfucker there used to try and boss you around. say it out loud, tired and true, just trying to get over the things hiding underneath you. so if you feel like a blank when you get to the root, just remember i know the same way that you do that the enemy is within.
4.
Purity 02:34
you— you wind-up mockingbird, you just repeat whatever you’ve heard. you— you pretty purity ring, i can’t tell you anything. don’t wanna give away too much, when i’d break both my legs and you’d take away my crutch. you— a falling satellite, burning up just to prove you’re right. you— been broken down before, you think that means i owe you more? me— just trying to act polite, when i’m going out and picking fights. you say you care, i guess you do. what makes you think that you have any right to? us— paths that intertwine, tell you whatever, that i’m doing fine. us— paths that intertwine, tell you whatever, that i’m doing fine.
5.
no. 63 03:22
hold me tight, and shut me up for the night; press a nail into my hand. leave a mark, stare down at the bright red arc, make a last desperate stand. desert dry— your cocoon that leaves me high, until the day is almost gone. drive on through, try to burn down a bridge or two, try to put a brave face on. but i stay thirsty when i lie on my bed and remember you. pains increase— sing out the troubled beast, hold me up in effigy. helpless day, you better get the fuck away, get the fuck away from me. when these lying eyes have had their fun and i’m down here in your arms again, you whisper holy prophecy, scriptures written in the air that breathes around us. but i stay thirsty when i lie on my bed and remember you. get the fuck away.
6.
there’ll never be a fear so bad it’s worth the risk of never finding out; we young and faithful giants hold our heads up just beneath the clouds. and we’re all made of whiskey and gunpowder fumes, and it’s lightning in a bottle that illuminates this room. hold your six shooter high, you don’t know if you’re outgunned until you try. march out on the main in full regalia— the bomb’s about to fall. and a hundred thousand tons of tnt wake up, and pick up on the call. we’re all exhausted but no one’s gonna sleep, i don’t need you to tell me that i’m gettin’ in too deep. hold your six shooter high, you don’t know if you’re outgunned until you try. and a couple dozen youngsters with nowhere else to go are kicking into high gear, getting ready for the show. when we’re surrounded we’re surrounded, and i hope that our blood flows all across the land. barricade ourselves inside somebody’s house to make our final stand. nobody here now, streets all quiet and dark, but somewhere on this planet we’ve left our little mark. hold your six shooter high, you don’t know if you’re outgunned until you try. hey!
